Do You Need a Pennsylvania Real ID?

The short answer is no.

The other short answer is yes, if you want to fly and don’t already have a passport.

Basically, Pennsylvanians are going to need a REAL ID-compliant form of identification in order to board a domestic commercial flight or enter a federal building or military installation that requires ID. Other forms of REAL ID-compliant identification include a passport or military ID.

    • A valid, unexpired U.S. Passport.
    • OR a certified copy of your birth certificate.
  2. Proof of Social Security Number.
    • Social Security Card
  3. Two proofs of current, physical PA address. Examples include:
    • Current, unexpired PA license or ID
    • PA Vehicle Registration
    • Auto Insurance Card
    • Utility Bill
  4. Proof of all legal name changes (if applicable).
    • Certified Marriage Certificate
    • Court Order
    • Divorce Decree

Can I order my REAL ID online?

Possibly. If you received your FIRST PA license AFTER 9/1/03, your required documents may already be on file with PennDOT. Please visit the REAL ID site in order to check your pre-verification online.

How do I get a REAL ID?

If you are not pre-verified, you’ll need to visit either a PennDOT REAL ID Center or a PennDOT Driver License Center in person to show them your verification documents. By visiting a REAL ID center you can get your REAL ID right away. By visiting a Driver License Center, you can have your documents verified and your REAL ID will be mailed to you.
